How
we Train
When you
join, and for about the first 6 months of training, you will work in a
one-on-one basis with one of the senior students. You might train with
3-4 different seniors in one night, but you will always get someone that
can give you the attention you need to increase your skills rapidly.
The newest students always get the most attention.
Phases
The way classes
are taught is subject to change over time as the instructor adapts to the
current student body and overall skill of the class. While there are no
belts or a ranking system at the RDU Wing Chun school, a student's progression
is tracked.
Currently the
subject matter is taught in "phases", which are made up of "blocks". For
Example, in the First Phase there are 6 blocks of instruction:
1. Foundations and Sil Lum Tao
2. Counters to Single Attacks (includes intro to Chi
Sao)
3. Follow-ups to Successful Counters (more Chi Sao)
4. Counters to Blocks (includes intro to Lop Dill)
5. Counters to Multiple Attacks
6. Mishaps and Sparring Drills.
There are
currently 8 phases. An average student that comes up regularly might
complete the program in 4 years. Completion is not necessary for results.
Most students can use what they learn after a few months.
Exercises
An
important part of fighting well is being in shape. For this reason
the school opens 30 mins before classes start. You can use this
time to strengthen your body with the exercises you will be shown when
you start. In addition, we power-train every night at the end of
class with body-weight exercises to provide functional strength and
endurance.
Video
clips of training will be posted soon. |
