SCHOOL OF SELF DEFENSE

Wooden Dummy

Although other martial arts use the wooden dummy as a training tool, Wing Chun uses the wooden dummy more than any other system.

The wooden dummy represents a training partner and the dummy is designed in such that nearly all Wing Chun techniques can be drilled on it. Proper training on the dummy reinforces the stance, arm placement, footwork, and power generation.

Muk Yan Jong Fa

(wooden man dummy techniques)
First and foremost, the dummy is a positioning tool. Because the wooden arms are at fixed angles to the dummy’s body, the practitioner’s movements become very precise.
The dummy is also used to supplement the punching bag for training short range punches palms, chops and kicks. The dummy's advantage over the punching bag is that the deflecting and simultaneous attack/defense movements of the system can be practiced on it.
Finally, the wooden dummy allows the student the opportunity to use his/her full force and power, while at the same time toughening the bones and tissues of the arms and legs.
Other martial arts do not maximize the benefit of wooden dummy training because their systems do not understand these Wing Chun concepts.
